A representação do adolescente em The Catcher in the Rye, de J. D. Salinger: relações entre literatura e identidade

Abstract

A adolescência é um período de transformações, que podem desencadear conflitos abundantes. Muitas vezes representado no campo das artes, como o cinema, o teatro e a literatura, o adolescente é desenhado como um ser rebelde e que age impulsivamente. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho objetiva analisar a figura adolescente representada na obra The Catcher in the Rye, de J. D. Salinger, abordando conflitos identitários implicados na compreensão de si e na relação com o outro. A justificativa para tal objetivo encontra-se articulada ao fato de as representações artísticas, e destacam-se aqui as produções literárias, constituírem um instrumento de reflexão muito produtivo para o ser humano. Ao se afastar do mundo real e adentrar um espaço fictício, o leitor tem acesso a uma gama infinita de possibilidades através de personagens. Transpondo as vivências ficcionais ao plano da sua realidade, o indivíduo passa a apreendê-lo com muito mais profundidade do que anteriormente. O estudo da obra The Catcher in the Rye, apresentado neste trabalho, é sustentado por uma base teórica de essência interdisciplinar, composta por autores como Antonio Candido (2014), Anatol Rosenfeld (2014), Wolfgang Iser (1999), Patrick Charaudeau (2009), Stuart Hall (2006) e Zygmunt Bauman (2000, 2004). A metodologia adotada é de natureza qualitativa, com finalidades descritivas, apoiada na revisão bibliográfica de teóricos que abordam questões relacionadas à literatura, à identidade e à cultura. Os aspectos selecionados para a análise concernem principalmente às relações da personagem principal com as outras personagens apresentadas, a partir da visão do próprio protagonista. Em síntese, os resultados encontrados indicam que a adolescência representada na obra é constituída pela falta de certezas sobre o futuro, bem como de uma busca pela eternização da inocência infantil e repúdio às imposições sociais que caracterizam o mundo adulto. Entende-se, por este estudo, que a personagem Holden Caulfield é representativa de um indivíduo que enfrenta dificuldades para estabelecer uma única identidade, pois o sujeito do mundo moderno está imobilizado entre o desejar e o fazer, o falar e o ser.

Adolescence is a period in life full of transformations, that can lead to abundant conflicts. Many times, represented in the field of arts, as the movies, theater, and literature, the teenager is drawn as a rebel being, that acts impulsively. In this context, the present work aims to analyze the figure of the adolescent represented in the literary work The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, approaching identity conflicts implicated in the comprehension of themselves, and the relationships with others. The justification for such an objective is articulated to the fact that the artistic representations, and it is emphasized here literary productions, constitute a productive instrument of thought to the human kind. As the reader move away from the real world and step inside a fictitious space, they have access to an infinite range of possibilities through the characters. As they transpose the fictional life experiences to their own reality, the individual starts to comprehend it with more depth than before. The study of the novel The Catcher in the Rye, presented in this work, is sustained by a theorical base of interdisciplinary essence, composed by authors as Antonio Candido (2014), Anatol Rosenfeld (2014), Wolfgang Iser (1999), Patrick Charaudeau (2009), Stuart Hall (2006) e Zygmunt Bauman (2000, 2004). The methodology adopted has a qualitative nature, with descriptive purposes, supported by literature review from theorists that approach issues related to literature, identity and culture. The selected aspects for the analysis concern mainly the relationships of the main character with the other characters presented, from the point of view of the protagonist himself. In summary, the results indicate that the adolescence represented in the novel is formed by the lack of certainty about the future, as well by the search of eternalization of the infantile innocence and renunciation to the social obligations that distinguish the adult world. It is understood by this study, that Holden Caulfield is the representation of an individual who faces adversities to establish a singular identity, because the subject of the modern world is paralyzed between the wishing and the making, the saying and the being.
